Programs at FRIB's Traineeship Site
As an FRIB INSIGHT traineeship student, you participate in a series of programs that prepare you for and immerse you in nuclear science related research. Students in the program who participate in research experiences are compensated. For example, the stipend for the in-person summer research program at FRIB is ~$5,000 plus travel and lodging support. The stipend during the remote academic year research in the fall and spring semesters is commensurate of the student's participation and up to $2,500 per semester.
There is an annual call for applications (application currently closed) from minority undergraduate students located at a U.S. institution. However, students are welcome to contact [email protected] at any time to inquire about the various opportunities. You are also encouraged to discuss with your local faculty mentor about INSIGHT opportunities.

Some of the programs at FRIB, such as the conference experience, are open to INSIGHT students across all traineeship sites. For programs at other traineeship sites, see the list of institutions.
Summer research immersionA two-week residential program on the campus of Michigan State University. Provides basic skills needed for scientific research. Includes a week-long Python course, a week-long laboratory skills course, and meetings with research advisors to discuss research in nuclear physics. Open to all FRIB traineeship participants.

Conference experienceAn annual conference for marginalized undergraduate students in nuclear physics open to all students and site leaders of the DOE-SC NP funded traineeship-programs. The program includes research discussions as well as professional, personal, and social development opportunities.

FRIB research experience
Remote academic year and summer in-person research opportunities. Students are matched with a research mentor at FRIB and supported for a research project. During the academic year (fall and spring), research is carried out remotely. Remote participation in MSU classes is also an option. Open to all FRIB traineeship participants.
More information about the science spanned by the research projects can be found on the home pages of current FRIB mentors (see button below). |
Academic Coaching programThe INSIGHT Academic Coaching program includes monthly meetings of INSIGHT traineeship participants with a graduate student coach and optional 90-minute tutoring sessions. These meetings are either remote, or, if students are on campus, in person. The student and their coach work together to determine academic and professional goals. The INSIGHT coach provides support on achieving those goals and helps serve as an accountability partner. Open to all FRIB traineeship participants.

PING Mentorship programUndergraduate students have the opportunity to serve as mentors of high-school students participating in the Physicists Inspiring the Next Generation: Exploring the Nuclear Matter (PING) program at FRIB. In addition to helping run the program and mentor participants, students will also have the opportunity to interact and conduct research with FRIB scientists. For PING mentoring opportunity, please contact [email protected].
